Lakers list Luka Doncic as questionable at Detroit with lower back tightness
Luka Doncic is questionable for Sunday's Lakers game at Detroit with lower back tightness, two nights after scoring 53 against Portland.

The Los Angeles Lakers have listed Luka Doncic as questionable for Sunday's game against the Detroit Pistons with lower back tightness. That leaves the league's top scorer as a game-time decision for the opener of a four-game road trip. According to USA TODAY Sports, this is the second time this season his back has put him on the injury report. He sat out one game in late October, the day after he faced Portland.
The timing makes the decision harder. Doncic scored 53 points in Friday's 124-118 NBA Cup win over the Trail Blazers, his second 50-point game of the season, CBS Sports noted. Through nine appearances he is averaging 40.1 points, 7.8 rebounds and 7.7 assists. Detroit is also the first half of a back-to-back, with a game in Atlanta on Monday, as HoopsHype pointed out. Heavy raised the possibility that the Lakers simply rest him on Sunday given the schedule.
Back trouble is not new for him. USA TODAY Sports lists back-related designations in 2019, 2021, 2024 and March 2025 before this season's two. If he cannot go, CBS Sports expects Austin Reaves to take over the offense, with Quentin Grimes and Collin Sexton picking up more minutes.
What it means for Sunday in Detroit
Los Angeles arrives 8-2 and has won four straight: Toronto, Miami, Sacramento and Portland. Over their last 10 games the Lakers have scored 122.0 points a night and given up 114.3. They are 3-1 on the road, and the one loss was a 112-95 defeat at Golden State. That game was also their lowest-scoring night of the season, and it is a fair preview of what a strong defense can do to them.
Detroit should test them the same way. The Pistons have allowed a league-low 101.8 points per game through eight games and sit third in the East, per USA TODAY Sports. The Lakers have passed 115 points in eight of their 10 games. Doing that again without the player who supplies roughly a third of their scoring would be a very different job.
The board for this game already reflects that. Detroit is favored, and Novig has the Pistons at -174 on the moneyline with the Lakers at +167. On the spread, Detroit is favored by 4.5 at -104 on Novig, with Los Angeles +4.5 at -102. The total sits at 221.5 on Novig, -102 on the over and -104 on the under. Across the 12 venues tracked, the best under available is BetRivers at 222.5 for -110, a point higher than Novig's number. Sportsbook hold runs from about 2.4% to 5.2% depending on the market. Novig's two moneyline prices together carry a margin of about 1%.
Expect those numbers to move once the Lakers settle Doncic's status. Tipoff is 6 p.m. ET on NBA TV and Spectrum SportsNet.
